• Isn’t Goodwill just a thrift store?

Goodwill is much more than just a store. Our primary mission is to provide job training and opportunities for people who have disabilities or other barriers to employment. Your donations help to provide over 200 local jobs in the Duluth community.

  • Why should I give away my stuff if Goodwill is just going to turn around and sell it for a profit?

Goodwill is a reputable, registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has been serving the greater Duluth community for more than 95 years. All of the revenue it generates through our stores helps to fund our mission of job creation.

  • I’ve heard that Goodwill will throw my donations into the trash.

Goodwill employees make every effort to ensure that your donations are put to good use. Items that meet our quality standards will be sold in one of our 14 regional store locations to help fund our mission. For goods that are unsalable, we work with secondary markets to help distribute or recycle. For instance, unsalable textiles are sold to secondary market dealers, who send them along to developing countries and other places.

  • Why should I shop at a Goodwill store?

You can feel good about shopping at Goodwill because it supports a great cause, and it benefits your checkbook as well. You’ll find name-brand clothing, jeans and shoes, quality furniture and one-of-a-kind gift ideas at Goodwill’s bright, well-organized stores, and the prices are unbeatable.

  • What donations does Goodwill need?

We are always in need of our top-selling items, such as quality furniture and clothes and shoes for the entire family. Donations ebb and flow with the seasons, and the winter and spring months are the toughest for Goodwill. When the weather gets cold, warm your heart by making a donation.

  • What about those other donation sites I’ve seen around town?

If you have some goods you would like to donate, you’ll want to do a little bit of research to make sure your gift goes to a great cause. Make sure you are giving your donation to a registered 501(c)3 organization; this way, you know your donation will go to a reputable charity, and you’ll receive a tax-deductible receipt as provided by law. Some stores will use a legitimate charity as a front to encourage donations, while only a small percentage of their proceeds actually go to the non-profit. This means that you’ll only be able to claim that percentage as a tax deduction.

  • How can I get a job through Goodwill?

The majority of our clients come to us on a referral basis from state agencies, but we do accept walk-ins as well. One of our case managers will meet with the candidate and do an assessment of their skill level, interests, and work experience, and from there determine if they are a good fit for Goodwill. Contact our main office for more information at 218-722-6351.

  • How else can I help Goodwill?

Our ultimate goal is to find community jobs for our clients, so we are always on the lookout for new partnership opportunities. If your business has staffing needs and you’re looking for reliable help, let our job placement specialists give you a hand.
